There is only one authentic portrait of Louis Pasteur in existence. Pasteur is viewed as the founder of microbiology. He is best known for the process of pasteurization. The French chemist was born in 1822 and died in 1895.

Portrait #1 was painted by Albert Edelfelt in 1885. Edelfelt (1854-1905) was a Finnish artist. He was one of the first artists from Finland to become internationally famous. This portrait shows Pasteur diligently working in his laboratory.

It is not known whether there are additional authentic portraits of the scientist. Photography was in existence during his lifetime and this greatly affected the number of portraits of Pasteur, however, the possibility still exists.
