There is only one known authentic portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus. Copernicus is considered to be the founder of modern astronomy. He was born in Poland in 1473 and died in 1543.

The artist is unknown for Portrait #1. The only known information about this portrait is that it was painted at the beginning of the 16th century. The portrait was painted in the astronomer's hometown of Torun.

There are two post mortem portraits to be mentioned. Jan Krystian Gladysz painted the first portrait in 1810. The second portrait was painted by January Matejko in the late 1800's.
