Joseph Wright of Derby was an 18th century English Romantic painter. Wright studied landscape painting under Thomas Hudson, and painted portraits of many merchants and landed gentry around England as an itinerant artist.
Most of Wright’s early portraits were half or three-quarter length single portraits. Wright lived and trained in Italy for several years, and returned and tried to compete with Gainsborough as portrait painter to the nobility. Wright’s later works were mainly landscapes.
Today, Wright’s paintings are housed all over the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about an 18th century English painting in your family collection? Contact us… we are the Joseph Wright of Derby experts.
