John Henry Twachtman was an American painter of impressionist landscapes. Twachtman was born in Cincinnati, Ohio where he spent much of his childhood. Twachtman studied painting under Frank Duveneck, who persuaded him to continue his education in Munich. Twachtman took courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, concentrating on painting and etching techniques.

Twachtman travelled around Europe before taking additional courses at the Academie Julian in Paris. Twachtman painted some of his best-known pieces while he was in France.

In 1886 Twachtman returned to the United States and bought a farm in Greenwich, Connecticut. The landscape of Connecticut became the major subject matter for his paintings. Twachtman became an important part of the nearby art colony in Cos Cob, Connecticut and the Art Students League in New York City. Twachtman was an active painter and teacher until the end of his life.
