Maurice Sterne was an American painter and sculptor, born in Libau, Latvia. Sterne spent most of his life and career in the United States, where he became a citizen. Sterne began his studies at the National Academy of Design. As a student he travelled extensively, visiting ancient site in Greece and the Far East.

In addition to international travel, Sterne spent several years living and painting in New Mexico and California. Sterne taught at the California School of Fine Arts before deciding to return to the East Coast.

In the 1940s, Sterne setup his own studio in Mount Kisco, New York. Sterne remained in New York until the end of his life. He received a number of awards and commissions for his paintings, sculptures. Sterne was honored to paint murals for the Library of the Department of Justice in Washington D.C.
