Kazys Šimonis was a Lithuanian artist born in the village of Starkonys in the North of the country. During Šimonis’s service in the Russian Army he was stationed in Kiev, where his interest in painting began. Šimonis began by taking evening classes and working with local artists. When his service ended, Šimonis moved to Kaunas where he trained to be a teacher and continued his artistic training.
Šimonis spent a short amount of time living and working in Paris and Berlin before returning to Kaunas. For the rest of his life, Šimonis was an active member of Lithuanian art associations and taught classes at several institutions.
Over the course of his career, Šimonis painted around 2,000 paintings. His works include landscape, portraits, posters and decorative panels. His style is sometimes referred to as “fantasy” or folk art.
