Maksim Sedej was a Slovenian painter born in the town of Dobračeva. Dedej began his artistic training in 1928, when he began attending the Zagreb Acedemy of Fine Arts. Sedej continued to paint figurative portraits and genre scenes after graduating in 1932.

Sedej was a well-established painter who showed work at the prestigious Venice Biennale two different years, representing Yugoslavia. In addition to showing his work in major venues, Sedej worked as a professor at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

While Sedej is best known for his many oil on canvas paintings, he also won awards for his illustrations. Sedej’s many accomplishments made him into a major figure in Slovenia during the mid-20th century.
