Erik Schmidt was an Estonian painter born on the island of Naissaar. Schmidt studied at the Swedish College in Haapsalu, an Estonian seaside town. Schmidt became a primary school teacher at the young age of seventeen to avoid military service. His family eventually fled to Sweden to avoid war and Soviet occupation.

Schmidt was eventually forced to fulfill his military duties, which led him to travel on extended naval journeys. It was aboard ship that Schmidt developed his great talent as a painter.
