Jakob Savinšek was a Slovenian sculptor born in the town of Kamnik in the Upper Carniolan. Savinšek moved to the capital city of Ljubljana secondary school, after which he studied medicine at the University of Ljubljana. Savinšek became interested in drawing and painting in the 1930s and 40s, though his training was interrupted by his arrest during World War II. For his own security, Savinšek joined the Slovenian Home Guard until the end of the war.

In 1945, Savinšek returned to his artistic development by taking classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. Savinšek soon became a leading figure in Slovenian art circles.

Savinšek is best known for his modernist sculptures. His style began as Expressionist before he developed his own aesthetic. Savinšek received several commissions to create sculptures or monuments throughout Slovenia. His work is now held in major collections including the National Gallery of Slovenia.
