Joseph Rebell was a late 18th century and early 19th century Austrian painter who was initially trained as an architect. He spent much of his life working in Italy, however, his work was highly admired by Emperor Franz I. The emperor eventually made Rebell the head of the Imperial Picture Gallery.
Rebell was praised in his lifetime and still today by critics for his brilliant use of color, which influenced a number of his fellow European landscape painters. Rebell painted in both watercolor and oil, and rarely painted compositions other than landscapes.
