Kristjan Raud was an Estonian artist born in Vinni Parish, Estonia. Raud is best remembered for his folkloric paintings and illustrations. Raud began his career as a teacher in Tartu after studying in Rakvere.

In the early 1890s, Raud moved to St. Petersburg and enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts. After several years of artistic training and travel, Raud returned to Tartu, Estonia and started teaching art to children. Raud eventually helped to found the Estonian National Museum, dedicated to national folklore.

Raud continued to paint and produce illustrations until the end of his life. His artwork, teaching and organizing efforts led to Raud receiving the Order of the Estonian Red Cross.
