Pierre-Paul Prud’hon was an 18th century French painter. He was known for decorative projects, including painting the ceilings and frescoes at the Louvre, the Palais de Justice and the Metz Cathedral.
He was a favorite of both the Empress Josephine and Marie Louise and received many commissions during his lifetime.
His paintings demonstrate an extraordinary grasp of anatomy, though his subjects were mainly political, military or allegorical. He favored the naturalism of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and rebelled against the Neo-Classical standards set by David. His private life was rife with tragedy however, and he weathered unhappy marriages, as well as the suicide of his beloved pupil Constance Mayer.
Prud’hon is noted by art critics for his use of light and shadow, which historians credit to his love for Italian masters, particularly Caravaggio.
Many of his preparatory black and white sketches and studies are still in existence today, and are housed in public and private collections around the world. Still wondering about a sketch or painting in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Pierre-Paul Prud’hon.
