Fairfield Porter was an American painter and art critic, born in 1907. Porter is known for his representational renditions of everyday life. At a time when many artists were turning to Abstract Expressionism, Porter continued to paint domestic spaces, portraits and landscapes.
Porter often painted friends and family members in their houses or apartments. Porter came from an affluent family and had a formal education, studying Art History at Harvard. Porter lived much of his live in New York City, befriending writers such as Frank O’Hara, John Ashbery and James Schuyler. Porter’s brother Eliot also pursued the arts and became a well-known photographer.
In 1927 Porter travelled around Europe and spent a particularly long amount of time in Italy viewing art. Porter returned to begin his own painting career. He was greatly influenced by French painters, Edouard Vuillard and Paul Bonnard, as well as Abstract expressionist, Willem de Kooning.
During the Great Depression Porter and wife, poet Anne Channing, moved to Chicago for some time before returning to New York . In New York, Porter worked many jobs, including an industrial designer for Navy Projects during World War II. Porter worked as an art critic for the Partisan Review and Art News, and The Nation.
Porter eventually moved with is family to Long Island, but spent much time painting in his New York City studio. Porter began to exhibit in solo shows at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York City. Within a nine-year period, Porter showed in the Whitney Museum six times and exhibited in the Venice Bienale. Fairfield Porter’s paintings are in museums and private collections all over the world.
