Giovanni Piranesi was an 18th century Italian engraver. Piranesi was the son of a master builder, and studied architecture. He visited Rome in 1740 and became infatuated with the diversity in the architecture of the city.
Piranesi was taught etching by Giuseppe Vasi and as a result, began to etch landscapes and cityscapes of Rome. These etchings were more than mere views and panoramas of a beautiful city, but were visual echoes of the artists’ great love for monumental Rome.
