Giovanni Battista Piazzetta was a Baroque-era Italian painter, born the son of a woodcarver. He received his earliest training in Bologna from Giuseppe Maria Crespi, who art historians believe influenced him to create genre paintings. As a result of his studies with Crespi, Piazzetta continued to paint religious and mythological themes for the rest of his career.

Compared to many other old master artists, Piazzetta’s oeuvre is substantially small. However, what work of his that does exist is as striking and beautifully executed as that of rival 18th century Italian artists. His paintings were created in the Baroque style of dramatic shadows and themes, and eventually evolved into a more Rococo style. This transition was gradual and was achieved by the help of his apprentice, Tiepolo.

It is said by art historians that Piazzetta was influenced by many of Rembrandt’s etchings. This in turn also helped him to adapt a talent for chiaroscuro, the method of painting that employs shadowing.

The bulk of Piazzetta’s works are still housed in Venice today, however, they are also in collections in the United States in Birmingham, Boston, Cambridge, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, as well as all around the world in Paris, Milan, Cologne, Dublin, Florence, Prague and Rome, and even in the Royal Collection in Windsor Castle. To own a piece of work by Piazzetta would be a treasure, and nothing short of valuable.
