Lucia Peka was a Latvian-American artist from Umurga, Latvia. Peka was born with the name Lūcija Rudzītis. Her birth name was ultimately used for her interment at a Latvian cemetery in New York.

Peka’s family fled to Sweden during World War II. Peka spent time in France and Germany before relocating to Montreal, Canada to study at McGill. From Montreal, Peka’s reputation took off. She soon exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art and won the Lila Shelby Award at New York’s National Academy Museum. Peka became one of the most important artists of the Lativian Diaspora, displaced during World War II.

Peka’s work is now proudly owned by the Latvian National Art Museum, which recognizes Peka’s contributions to Latvian art. Peka is now an inspiration for Latvian and female artists around the world.
