Karl Pärsimägi was an Estonian artist born in Võrumaa, Estonia. Despite Pärsimägi’s humble beginnings of being raised in a peasant family, he began formal artistic training at the age of seventeen. Pärsimägi attended the Pallas Art School under several mentors, including Konrad Mäe, Nikolai Triigi, Ado Vabbe and Anton Starkopf.
Following Pärsimägi’s studies, he travelled to Germany and France with a group of artists from Tartu, Estonia. After spending an extended period of time in Paris, Pärsimägi exhibited his work at Tallinn’s Art Hall, in Estonia’s capital.
Pärsimägi was greatly influenced by French artists Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne’s use of color and contrast. Pärsimägi made the unfortunate decision to stay in Paris and continue painting while France came under German occupation. Pärsimägi was placed in Drancy concentration camp, where he died in 1942. Despite Pärsimägi’s unfortunate death, his legacy is maintained through his artwork. Many of his paintings are in major museum collections in Estonia.
