Marie-Lucie Nessi was born in Paris in 1910 and entered art school at the age of sixteen. As a young student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Nessi became friends with fellow painters Foujita, Kisling and Helion. Like so many other artists of her time, she frequented the cafes of Montparnasse in the evenings for inspiration.
In 1932, Nessi met and married artist Louis Valtat whom she would have three children with. However, the two would later separate in 1949 and the couple became estranged. Now a single mother, Nessi was forced to find a way to support her chidren and opens up a small ceramics factory. It isn’t until 1958 that Nessi is able to fully devote herself to painting.
The bulk of her oeuvre consists of post-Impressionistic landscapes and still life, many of which are harbor scenes in muted tones with loose brush strokes. Today, Nessi’s work is housed in public and private collections all over France, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about a post-Impressionistic still life or landscape hanging in your home? Contact us…it could be by Marie-Lucie Nessi.
