In 1886 Mauve moved to the Laren, where he helped to found the Laren School with his partners Jozef Israels and Albert Nehuys. Mauve initially studied in the studio of Van Os, an academic and traditional painter. Mauve eventually strayed from Os’s painting methods and began using looser brushwork and a more intense and brilliant palette.

When Van Gogh was just beginning to paint he worked under Mauve. Their working relationship ended as Mauve insisted that Van Gogh paint in a more realistic and traditional manner. Though Van Gogh eventually developed his own unique style, Mauve is remembered for influencing Van Gogh’s early work.
