Franz Anton Maulbertsch was an Austrian artist, considered to be the foremost painter of frescoes during the Hapsburg period. Some of his portraits in the form of oil paintings still survive today, though he is primarily known for his outstanding decorations.
Maulbertsch was particularly productive and worked all over Europe creating glorious scenes in neoclassical, baroque and rococo styles. For many of these frescoes and decorative paintings, he created a number of preparatory drawings as well as etchings.
Today, Maulbertsch’s oeuvre is displayed predominantly in Hungary, and his works are still highly valued and sought after today at auction. Still wondering about an 18th century European painting, sketch or etching in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Franz Anton Maulbertsch.
