Ramos Martínez criticized the school for not valuing individuality and focusing on drawing from plaster casts. Ramos Martínez preferred to work outdoors, painting people and street life.

In 1913 Ramos Martínez was appointed Director of the National Academy. Ramos Martínez opened the Escuelas de Pintura al Aire Libre (Open Air Schools of Painting). One of the first students of this new school was, David Alfaro Siqueiros, now known as one of the most important Mexican muralists.

In 1928, Ramos Martinez and his wife moved from Mexico to Los Angeles, California to seek medical treatment for their daughter. Ramos Martínez’s art greatly changed in California. Still painting on newsprint, Ramos Martínez created a modern yet folkloric, ‘Mexicana’ aesthetic. His subjects ranged from ‘Indians’ selling flowers, dramatic landscapes and religious themes of Mexico.
