Alberto Magnelli was an Italian Abstract painter known for his geometric designs. As a young man, Magnelli was influenced by the masterworks that he saw in his hometown of Florence, and initially taught himself how to paint. Living in Italy, he was exposed to some of the newest movements in avant-garde and made friends with Futurist painters like Boccioni and Marinetti.

While Magnelli primarily created colorful and geometric Abstract compositions, hints of Cubism, Futurism and even Fauvism can be seen in his paintings. In the 1930’s, Magnelli was living in Paris and became friends with Picasso, Kandinsky and Le Corbusier, and it was during this time that he was influence by the ideas of Purism and Surrealism. As an Abstract artist, Magnelli did not restrict himself to painting in any one style, and experimented with nearly everything, including Japanese art.

World War II forced Magnelli and his wife to flee from Paris, so they lived in the south of France during this time. Materials were scarce during this time, so Magnelli spent the majority of the war writing poetry and sketching. Once the war was ended, Magnelli returned to Paris and began painting once again. From this point on until the end of his life, Magnelli continued to paint in his trademark geometric style.
