When asked how to say his name, he told The Literary Digest “The correct pronunciation of my name is yonas lee. Although I have adopted the anglicized pronunciation of Jonas in this country, Lie, however, is pronounced lee in Scandinavia, and I have insisted upon it in English also.” (Charles Earle Funk, What’s the Name, Please?, Funk & Wagnalls, 1936.)
