Philip Alexius de Laszlo was a Hungarian-born painter who moved to England in 1907 and became a British citizen in 1914. He was initially trained in Budapest, and also studied and Munich and Paris before settling in England. In the beginning, de Laszlo established himself as a well-known portraitist, and eventually was commissioned by high profile clientele such as Edward VII and other aristocrats.
De Laszlo received his first important commission in 1894 by the Bulgarian royal family. He eventually would be sought after to paint kings of England and Spain, as well as President Roosevelt, the German Kaiser and the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria.
In 1917, de Laszlo was imprisoned and his health took a turn for the worse. He was then sent to a nursing home under house arrest until 1919 when his name was cleared. De Laszlo did not resume portrait painting until after World War I, so during these years, it is not likely that he created much art. However, once he was back to painting again, de Laszlo was hailed by some art critics as Europe’s leading portrait painter.
During his lifetime, de Laszlo had a number of prestigious awards bestowed upon him for his skill as a portrait painter. In 1900, he earned a grand gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition for his portrait of Pope Leo XIII, and was named a member of the Royal Victorian Order by Kind Edward VII in 1909. He traveled all over the world creating his large oeuvre of portraits, and was in high demand by royalty and affluent individuals. Though it is likely that he painted some landscapes, still life and other compositions, they are generally lesser known.
Today, de Laszlo’s work is housed all over the world in private collections as well as public collections like the National Gallery in London. Still wondering about an heirloom portrait in your family estate? Contact us…it could be by Philip de Laszlo.
