Joseph Hickel painted the portraits of the Austrian royal family and about 3000 others, including many actors. He traveled to Italy to paint the portraits of Florentine and other Italian nobility under the commission of Empress Maria-Theresa. Though many of his paintings have been lost, engravings after them still exist.
