James McDougal Hart was a Scottish-born American painter of the Hudson River School. Hart was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland but moved to Albany, New York as a young child. Hart learned a lot from his older brother, William who was also a Hudson River School artist.
In New York Hart made a living making carriages before training as an artist in Europe. Hart trained in both Munich and Dusseldorf. When Hart returned to the United States he exhibited at the Academy of Design. Hart soon became an associate at the academy, where he exhibited for decades to follow. Hart also lived and exhibited in Brooklyn, New York.
Hart painted similar subjects as his brother, but was known for taking on ambitious, large-scale projects. Both brothers often painted cattle and pastoral scenes outside of New York City. Hart followed the philosophical beliefs of the Hudson River School and cherished the time he spent in nature.
Hart’s paintings are now in museums and private collections around the world. Do you think you own a painting by James McDougal Hart? Contact us. We are the James McDougal HArt Certification Experts.
