Hugo Kārlis Grotuss was a Latvian painter born in Jaunpils parish, Latvia. Grotuss is best remembered for his realist landscapes and flower paintings. In his lifetime it is estimated that he completed around 2,000 painted works.
Grotuss began his studies under artist, Jūlijs Madernieks. Grotuss took formal classes at the Central School of Technical Drawing in Saint Petersburg. Grotuss stayed in Saint Petersburg, working as an instructor for several years.
In 1920 Grotuss returned to Latvia, joining the Union of Independent Painters. Grotuss exhibited regularly with the Union, and continued to work as an art instructor. Grotuss died at the young age of 66 in Dillingen, Germany.
