While living in Italy , Gros was introduced to Napoleon, who became one of his best known subjects. Gros returned to France in 1799 and frequently participated in the Salons until his death in 1835. In his later years, Gros attempted to paint mythological scenes in the Neoclassical style, but found little success. Depressed due to his failures as an artist, Gros drowned himself in the Seine River in 1835.
