Joseph Sifrede Duplessis was a popular portrait painter among nobility, aristocrats, artists and musicians in the 18th century. He studied under Subleyras and received many portrait commissions during his lifetime. He was known for his myriad paintings of Benjamin Franklin, and painted the official portrait of Louis XVI in 1775 at Versailles.
