Joseph Ducreux was an 18th century French portrait painter. He was frequently patronized by Marie Antoinette and painted a portrait of her and Louis XVI just before their marriage. Maria Antoinette’s mother, Maria Theresa, also had a portrait painted by Ducreux.
Ducreux did not exhibit at the salons, and was not a member of the Academie, though he was a friend and ally of fellow artist and politician Jacque-Louis David
