Born in Auverne, France, Victor Charreton grew up with an admiration for poetry and painting. However, he began his studies as a lawyer, but eventually gave it up for painting. Charreton studied under Ernest Hareux, Louis Japy and Armand Balouzet and held his first exhibition at the Salon in 1894. Despite the fact that he was already showing his work, Charreton could not devote himself entirely to painting until 1902 when he moved to Paris.
Charreton would typically become known for his landscapes and city scenes, as well as for still life paintings. Critics have compared him to the likes of Monet, Sisley and Pissaro as he carried on the style and tradition of the old Impressionists.
Although he was compared to the Impressionists, Charreton really walked a fine line between Fauvism and classical Impressionism. He was fond of bright colors and bold brushstrokes like the Fauves, but also honored the beauty and use of light that the Impressionists were known for. Typically, Charreton would work in oil and watercolor on either canvas or board, and his signature is usually present on the front of his compositions.
In his lifetime Charreton traveled a great deal all over Europe from France to Belgium, Holland, Spain, England and even to Algeria. His work was also exhibited worldwide in New York, Japan, and even Toledo, Ohio.
Charreton won a silver medal at the Salon in 1913, and was also made an officer of the Legion of Honor. Charreton was even one of the founding members of the Salon d’Automne. Today, his work is housed all over the world, and perhaps even in your own home.
