Benjamin Chapney was born in New Hampshire is 1817. Chapney is an important 19th century painter of the White Mountains in his home state. Chapney trained as a lithographer in Boston but had early success as a painter. Chapney is known for leading a colony of artists who worked in North Conway, New Hampshire. Chapney’s paintings were used to make lithographs, sold to tourists who could not afford original paintings.

Chapney frequently travelled between Europe and Boston, painting large panoramic landscapes. Chapney exhibited in as diverse locations as Boston, Worcester, New Haven and New York City. Chapney became apart of the Boston art community and helped to found the Boston Art Club.

Chapney eventually returned to the White Mountains, bringing along several artist friends from Boston and New York. In 1853, Chapney married and bought a summerhouse in New Hampshire. For more than fifty years Chapney continued to paint in New Hampshire and build a community of artists around him. Chapney continued to exhibit in big cities to network and recruit more artists to come to North Conway.
