Portrait of a Young Lady
Cardinal Melchior de Polignac
Rosalba Carriera was an 18th century Italian Roco painter. She was born and died in Venice and was sucessful in an era when there were few other female painters. She worked mainly in pastels and was very popular in Venice, and also among the British tourists, Her miniatures on ivory and beautifully painted snuff boxes were in great demand, so much, that she was eventually requested by many members of nobility in Europe to paint their portraits.

Some of her nude paintings were also found with great success, despite their somewhat explicit sexual nature. She went blind toward the end of her life, and as a rseult, suffered a mental breakdown.
