Cappelle was born in Amsterdam, where he trained to be a dyer. Cappelle became quite wealthy and respected in his craft, but realized his true interest was in painting.
Cappelle was a serious art collector and owned about five hundred Rembrandt drawings as well as paintings by Rubens, van Dyke, and Brouwer.
Cappelle taught himself to paint during his spare time, teaching himself through practice and studying the old masters. Cappelle won great praise as a painter of marine scenes characterized by a silver/gray tonality. His most iconic paintings depict grand ships on tranquil seas.
Cappelle’s paintings are now in most major European and American museums. The Rijksmuseum and the National Gallery London have the most extensive collections of his work.
