Mathias Alten was a German/American Impressionist painter. Born in Germany, Alten came to the United States at the age of 17 and began working as a painter. He received a number of commissions from private patrons, as well as the government, and was awarded US citizenship in 1898.

Around the turn of the century, Alten traveled to Europe where he studied at the Academie Colorossi, as well as the Academie Julien in France. He would again return to Europe in the 1910’s and the 1920’s, where he studied in the Netherlands and Spain.

Though he traveled extensively, Alten made his home base in Grand Rapids, MI. As a result, many of his paintings depict the Grand River and the Michigan countryside is often featured in his landscapes. Today his paintings are housed in public and private collections worldwide, and perhaps in your own home.
